A short while ago, there was an article in The Guardian, I believe it was, (yes, of course it was), in which Beard and Hillary Clinton discussed being disappointed in never having been in a position to reject an advance from Trump. I commented that he, I was sure, would be as pleased to have been rejected by these two individuals as I would have been. Needless, to say, my comment was deleted.
Right. I have to admit I have a soft spot for Mary Beard in the great british tradition of “upper class twits”. And her candour in this is interesting, in that she admits she retells her “story” (of an unsatisfactory sexual encounter as a student travelling in Italy) has been changed and embellished over the years according to the mood of the retelling. I don’t know the law of Italy but following the Sexual Offences Act 2003 the incident might possibly be “Rape” though It wouldn’t have been previously. All in all a tale of our times when unsatisfactory or unsavoury behaviour becomes akin to capital crime. If nothing else it highlights the likely injustices in the “historic abuse” as people re cast their stories to fit modern narratives.

The only soft spots on Beard that interest me, are the ones I would be interested in aiming my right boot at.
