Maria Miller MP elected unopposed as chair of the Women and Equalities Committee

The woeful Conservative MP Maria Miller – who always reminds me of a manatee, in much the same way that mention of Reginald Perrins’ mother-in-law put him in mind of a hippopotamus – has been elected unopposed to chair the Women and Equalities Committee. The exciting announcement is on the committee’s website, here. Conservative nominations for the post included Iain Duncan Smith, to his eternal shame, while Labour nominations included Jess Phillips and Yvette Balls.

  1. Personally I have a lot of time for IDS for his work on introducing some rationality and limits to our destructive welfare system. However he is a good Catholic and so has all the usual reverence for women, mothers that one would expect from a very traditional chap. Easily persuaded into white knightery.

  2. I know what a manatee looks like but not Maria Miller so I googled her name but typed in Maria Manat before I realised my mistake. I agree with you, that is what she looks like. I hope the males of Basingstoke who voted for her – I can’t imagine that any men did so –
feel she’s looking out for their interests.
