Last November we sent Amber Rudd MP, Home Secretary, an FOI request in relation to MGM. A month later, after receiving her department’s response, we posted a blog piece with the snappy title, “A Home Office contender for a ‘Most stupid response to a FOI request’ award (in relation to the legality of MGM)”.
We promptly send Amber Rudd a new FOI request, here. It consisted of this simple question:
Why are the police not bringing prosecutions against those who carry out non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors, the infliction of bodily harm on minors without the legal capacity to give permission to that bodily harm, in breach of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861?
We received an email acknowledgement from the Home Office, which included this:
We will aim to send you a full response by 05/01/2017 which is twenty working days from the date we received your request.
Almost a week has passed since the deadline, and we’ve emailed the Home Office to point out the delay, but we’ve heard nothing back. We’ll keep posting weekly updates about the delay, until we get a response.

In my experience a delay usually means that its been “kicked upstairs” simple FOIs will be answered by junior staff just checked over by someone a bit senior. Keep pushing.

Amber has some very generous circumcised friends so there won’t be any prosecutions on her watch.

Dear Mr Buchanan,
The empowered woman that normally deals with FOI requests is on maternity leave. Unfortunately, her stand in is off with PMT and probably further complications (reclaiming her tampon tax). We do have a young work experience chap currently handling your request but unfortunately he has failed his Equality and Diversity training. As a result, he is required to redo his training and will not be available for six months.
We at the office take all FOI requests seriously but for organisations such as yours, we couldn’t care less.
