Alice Walpole, 24, marine biologist, 24, who was ’10 out of 10 drunk’ on Barcardi and Coke, smashed a glass into a stranger’s face and almost blinded him in completely unprovoked attack after flirting with him in a bar. Suspended sentence.

Our thanks to Ray for this. The end of the piece:

Mr Rupert Taylor, defending, said Walpole has never been in trouble before and the attack was completely out of character.

She was anxious and depressed at the time because of a family illness and drank far more than she should have done, she added.

Her work at Bristol aquarium made her unsuitable for a curfew because she was on call at all hours and could not wear a tag because she sometimes had to dive into deep fish tanks.

  1. Regrettably, this is not all that unusual. I don’t know quite how many of these cases there are but I notice at least one a year.

That said, I can’t find the one in Southampton (I think it was) last year. That was expecially nasty as they guy had his throat slashed by a stranger. She walked free (“it was an accident, gov.”)

Here’s one from the year before:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2726219/Yasmin-Thomas-victim-disgusted-walked-free.html

You have to bear in mind that these are women. We can’t possibly put them in prison, that’s only for men, you see (this is equality .. or something). Anyway, their victims are only men, so who cares?

Oh, and here’s a other woman walking free this year after a glassing:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3638915/Respectable-woman-48-glassed-man-stamped-head-heels.html
    ..and another in her 40s:
    http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/14713727.Woman_glassed_man_over_his_light_hearted_comment_about_her_karaoke_performance/?ref=mrb&lp=6

Now, in accordance with the government’s “Violence against women and girls” policy, repeat after me: ‘We must teach men not to be violent towards women.’

  2. this indicates that treating our women so politely and so considerately may not actually be so civilized but rather so foolish. We must admit a mistaken approach and change course. If we continue insisting that we got it all right, then nothing can change. And quite clearly, some things need to change, and sooner, rather than later..

  3. Sort of begs a question. If said victim, in an act of revenge, were to glass his assailant would the courts be similarly lenient. I suspect that it would be like the one way street of revenge porn.
