Valerie Barber, 56, headmaster’s assistant, plundered over £150,000 from exclusive London prep school by pressuring parents to pay fees into her own personal account. Avoids jail by a ‘whisker’.

Our thanks to Francis for this. The woman embezzled over £150,000, and has to date repaid only £26,104. There is nothing in the article to suggest she will be required to repay any of the balance. First we have an almost inevitable element in such stories:

Barber sobbed in the dock…

Then a judge who would be better employed as a comedian:

Sentencing, Judge Robin Johnson told her: ‘Employers should be able to trust employees to act in an honest way, not for selfish gain. It took a long time for your crime to be discovered, and I accept that no blame was cast on anybody else.

I consider I can avoid sending you to prison immediately by a whisker, but you come about as near to going to prison as you can.’

Yet another suspended sentence. So the woman has netted about £124,000, and received no serious punishment.

The second International Conference on Men’s Issues is ON!

151106 ICMI16 FINAL

I bring some great news. We’ve booked an outstanding venue for the second International Conference on Men’s Issues, London, for the dates we originally planned, 8-10 July. We need to sort out some minor administrative details, and our current estimate is that will take around a week, maybe a little longer. As soon as it’s possible, details of the venue (and so much more) will be posted simultaneously on the websites of J4MB and A Voice for Men. Please wait for the formal announcement before ordering tickets, or making commitments to travel and accommodation.

ICMI16 will be a truly international event. The list of countries from which we shall have speakers and/or delegates is growing by the week, and is currently:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Romania
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

One final thing. The conference hall has a maximum capacity of 200 people. We confidently predict that once tickets go on sale to the general public – late January, or early February – fewer than 50 tickets will be available, given the number of pre-registrations.

ICMI16 is going to be a memorable event. We look forward to seeing you there.
