Rugby World Cup – Scotland v South Africa

As someone of 50% Scottish extraction – the other 50% is French-Canadian – I was interested to see that Scotland trounced Japan in the Rugby World Cup this afternoon. Japan beat South Africa the other day, which leads inevitably to this conclusion:

Scotland is superior to South Africa at rugby.

No alternative interpretation of the results could be credible. I confidently expect Scotland to beat South Africa by at least 20 points when they meet. Torrential rain in the hours before the game, and during it, might help…

  1. But rugby is such a damnably masculine game. I must wonder if perhaps it could not be improved by playing indoors, seated, and for everyone to have strictly equal time playing with the ball, passing it around politely between opposing teams. It can be such a boisterous and competitive experience – players and supporters alike really ought to have access to safe spaces, just in case they are triggered or feel uncomfortable.

  2. Half Scotch, half French Canadian? That’s a potent combination for sheer bloody mindedness. Now I know where you get all that determination.

  3. As a Canadian of Irish and French-Canadian descent I don’t know what to make of the trouncing that Ireland handed to Canada. I suppose that I’ll just have to wait a while longer for my descendants to win against the land of my ancestors.
