Two days ago I was with Ray Barry (our candidate in Broxtowe) in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, a town in the Ashfield constituency in which I’ll be standing at the general election. I was there for a filmed interview with a major broadcaster, but took the opportunity to look at (and photograph) the numerous posters in the window of the office of Gloria De Piero, Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.

The posters which had a gender bias were in line with what you would expect from someone with such a ludicrous job title. Herewith some incontestable facts:

Around 40% of victims of domestic abuse are men, the vast majority of them abused by women.

Approximately as many men die from prostate cancer as women die from breast cancer. The national screening programme for breast cancer costs £100 million p.a., the one for cervical cancer £150 million p.a.

There are no national screening programmes for prostate cancer, or any other male-specific cancers.

Two posters related to domestic violence. One was for a helpline which only supports female victims. The second was about male perpetrators. No posters mentioned male victims or female perpetrators.

GDP only just retained the Ashfield seat for Labour in 2010, with a majority of 192 votes more than her Lib Dem challenger.

We call on the good people of Ashfield to abstain from voting for GDP on 7 May.

The more votes that J4MB receive, the louder will be the message that men and boys must no longer be treated by the state as second-class citizens.
