Our thanks to J for pointing us towards a new ONS report, on people of 15 or over committing suicide in the UK in 2013.
6,233 people committed suicide in 2013.
4,858 of them were men – 78% of the total.
The male/female suicide rate differential rose again, to 3.53:1. The differential has more than doubled since 1982, when it was under 1.7:1.
Suicide remains the leading cause of men in the 20-34 age range (24% of deaths) and 35-49 (13% of deaths). The government takes no interest in the matter, other than spinning the problem as the result of mental health issues, or men not seeking help. It’s a scandal of epic proportions. And we shouldn’t forget suicide is only the tip of an iceberg of male misery, much of it the direct consequence of the state’s actions and inactions.
So, so sad. 🙁 It appears that it is up to private groups and organizations to step up and provide the needed support for people contemplating, attempting, and/or making completed suicides. So many may also just not know what to do or how to help that they don’t. More training and support are definitely needed, everywhere.
“Men not seeking help” … hmmm … when I get into the state to be able to ask for it I practically beg the NHS for help… but nothing comes of it. Possibly because I haven’t actually put something into my body to actually attempt to terminate my life that they don’t care? But that’ll come one day when I “man up” and “get the balls” to actually do it. I’ll just make sure I implicate the NHS in it’s failings to actually give a damn when I was begging for help.
Reblogged this on World4Justice : NOW! Lobby Forum..
“85 women had been killed by their current or a former partner, compared to 24 men.” she writes and goes on to say”When women kill their male partners, it’s usually after they have suffered years of abuse from him” so the 24 dead men will have brought it on themselves! Distasteful victim blaming of the worst kind.
Each death is a tragedy but in a population of millions a very rare tragedy. I don’t normally read the Independant but does it usually ” make reason stare”? http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/femicide-is-a-leading-a-cause-of-premature-death-for-women–why-arent-we-doing-more-10045297.html
it would be risible if it were not that this sort of total nonsense is from people Womensaid with real power in formulating policy.
A friend of a friend is talking about killing himself. Apparently he is being denied access to his daughter, his ex wife is completely nuts.
“And we shouldn’t forget suicide is only the tip of an iceberg of male misery, much of it the direct consequence of the state’s actions and inactions”.
How very accurate, and sad.
It never fails to amaze me that, just that statement alone fails to get anyone’s attention, even most men! When will people finally have enough of these ‘crimes against humanity’???
50 years and still going strong. Will it be in my lifetime?
