William Collins on The Corston Report (2007)

We have some commentary in our draft manifesto about the Corston Report (2007) – the report by (Labour peer) Baroness Corston about the treatment of women by the criminal justice system. We’re going to delete it and simply point readers to this new piece by William Collins.

  1. Mr. Collins is spot on. The Corston report is, as he points out, built on the presumption that men are inherently of less worth and consideration than women. It is the latest in a long stream of reports starting in the 19th Century based on the idea that women are far too precious and fragile to take responsibility for their actions. The irony is that this movement , to prevent women going to goal for debt or theft , was the genesis of laws preventing women taking out loans or entering some forms of contracts. In effect their male relatives were held responsible . So no more Gaol for debt. Of course this came under fire in the 60s as the female “pedestal” was atttacked by feminists. Yet here the Baroness mounts 19th century arguments to extend special protections and a privileged status to women. It is of course wholly sexist.
