Simon Heffer comments on David Cameron’s cabinet reshuffle

I’ve long been an admirer of the columnist Simon Heffer, and ended my longstanding subscription to an increasingly less perceptive Daily Telegraph when he left the paper to write a column for the Daily Mail. I wish he’d say more about gender issues, but hope springs eternal. His article in today’s edition of the paper about Dave’s recent cabinet reshuffle is very good, be sure to also scroll down and read his short piece titled, ‘Don’t doom us to another Miller’.

  1. 29 of 48 female Tory MPs get government jobs. Wow. They’re going to need a LOT of government jobs to make sure male Tory MPs have the same chance of landing one. Seems the Tory boys are “gents” letting the ladies through.

Interesting foray into the debate. And often the debate about parental leave etc. is between women. On a simple point of Equity any leave should be parental so the relatively few men who wish to can take such leave if their wife continues to work. Two things occur to me . One is Melanie Phillips observation that modern feminism is an ideology of adolescence, as as women grow older their priorities change to. And that the usually male role and therefor interest in this debate is ignored, in that he( or sometimes she) will have to earn more to cover the the loss of income. Something even Conservative women forget. I suspect a clear legal shred right to parental leave might push a more realistic debate. For most couples the cost of housing let alone anything else makes leaving work pretty impossible. Mothers being particularly wise? Probably not but it is helpful to get their more adult views heard rather than the perpetual petulant teenagers of feminism.
