Kathy Gyngell: Britain’s land girls refuse to dance to the BBC’s gender equality tune

A short but outstanding piece from Kathy Gyngell on the new website of which she’s a co-editor:

Also be sure to read the second comment. It was written by someone whose name I don’t know, Herbert Purdey, if he reads this and contacts me mike@j4mb.org.uk I shall be most appreciative.

Laura Nichols (26) plundered £10,000 from vulnerable man’s bank account for year-long shoes and handbags spree

Ms Nichols’s (male) defence counsel is reported as saying:

‘She found herself living beyond her means.’

‘She found herself…’ What? She’s 26 years old, but is described as if she’s a young child with no personal agency, no power to resist temptation.

Some common sense from the magistrate, spoken while the woman was ‘sobbing’ – as women always seem to do during their trials, to solicit sympathy and get a lenient sentence (if any sentence at all):

Mr Recorder Ian Wyn Lloyd Jones told her he would not be doing his job if he suspended the sentence – and jailed her for eight months at Swansea Crown Court.

Does it appear to you, as it appears to me, that his personal preference would have been to hand down a suspended sentence, but he wouldn’t have been ‘doing his job’ if he’d done so? He surely wouldn’t have made the same comment to a male carer convicted of such a crime.

Women such as Caroline Criado-Perez and Laura Bates see misogyny everywhere. Day after day I find myself thinking:

What planet are these crazy women living on?

Caroline Criado-Perez – our public challenge

Last summer I was interviewed at length on BBC Radio about ‘women on boards’ and related topics. It was a phone-in show, and one of the callers was Caroline Criado-Perez – the young woman behind the ‘women on banknotes’ and other silly campaigns.

CC-P came out with numerous ludicrous statements – quelle surprise – one of which I challenged on air on the grounds it was factually incorrect. She didn’t respond to my challenge, nor did she respond to my later public challenge, downloadable through this link:

I’m sometimes asked if a recording was captured of the interview, along with CC-P’s laughable ‘contribution’, and I’m pleased to say it does, on our YouTube channel. Click on the following link, then scroll down to the file dated 7 June 2013. The commentary underneath the video explains where different sections of the long programme are – just click on the time(s) to get straight to the piece(s) you want:

Police drop year-long investigation costing tens of thousands of pounds after 13-year-old schoolgirl who claimed she had been violently raped admits lying

Tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayer’s money wasted. Predictably, the girl will face no charges, as is usually the case with girls and women who make false rape allegations. What lesson will that send her, and others? The usual one.

Janet Bloomfield will be going to the Detroit conference. Yeehah!!!

We’re big fans of Janet Bloomfield (‘JudgyBitch’) here at the international headquarters of J4MB in the throbbing metropolis of Bedford (following the recent office relocation from Bath). While she’s not blogging as many pieces as she once did – as well as caring for a young family, she’s doing a PhD in Business Studies – her pieces are always worth reading. So I was delighted to learn this afternoon that she’ll be attending the Detroit conference on June 27/28 (as a visitor rather than a speaker). She’ll be accompanied by her husband, known in his social circle as ‘Mr Lucky’ for obvious reasons – Mrs B could earn a living as a Cameron Diaz double. Her blog piece with the announcement about Detroit:

She’s planning to publish a new video piece over the weekend, about the Detroit conference, which we’ll link to as soon as we get it. I think I’m right in saying she’s only published one video piece so far, and it was about ‘rape culture’:
