Steve Brulé: ‘Suicide and the World Happiness Report’

In the UK, the male : female suicide ratio is unusually low by the standards of most countries. Only three British men commit suicide for every British woman who does, although British women ‘attempt’ suicide three times more often than British men. Experts in the field agree that this reflects women’s expectation that in a crisis they’ll be supported by friends, family, the state… Men soon realise that in a crisis, support is unlikely to be available. A small example of the different support made available to homeless men and women, as reported by a female social worker:

The lack of state resources dedicated to understanding the causes of male suicide, and reducing the rate at which it occurs, is a scandal globally. So we were interested to read an insightful new piece on the subject by Steve Brulé http://blog.studiobrule.com for AVfM:

  1. I heard the same “women attempt suicide 3 times more than men do” stat for Canada after long searching I found one stat which showed something like 60% more women are hospitalized for failed suicide attempts. Does the UK have a real source for such a stat or is it another “1 in 4” situation?
