Friends are all too familiar with my obsessive interest in comedy. I consider comedy to be one of the – if not the – most effective stress relievers available to mankind.
For many years a line in a sitcom has haunted me. It randomly comes to mind several times a year, usually when I’m driving on long journeys, for some obscure reason. For the life of me I could never recall the sitcom in which it appeared:

What a bunch of crap!!!I often wondered if it might have been said by the lugubrious American comedy legend Walter Matthau (1920=2000) but never managed to find a link. This being 2023, I finally decided to do a Google search and the answer appeared in moments. The line was uttered by Mr Hamilton, an exasperated American, in the Waldorf Salad episode in the second series of Fawlty Towers, to many comedy afficionados (including myself) the greatest episode in the greatest British sitcom ever broadcast. The video clip in question is here (3:50). Mr Hamilton was memorably played by the Canadian actor Bruce Boa (1930 – 2004).

She was told there would be no communication between them for six weeks. ‘I don’t think there is anything more devastating than being separated from your child,’ she says. Who had ordered this separation? A religious cult? Was Jenny a neglectful mother? No, it was a UK family court that had found her guilty of ‘parental alienation’ – deliberately turning her daughter against a father from whom Jenny was estranged.
