Though the use of slavery legislation is unusual, such cases are not uncommon, you may recall the cases of Professor Stephen Hawking and Eddie Kidd. More common are cases where mothers use their adult disabled son or daughter as an income generator, using what can be quite substantial benefits to fund their party lifestyle rather than the care the benefits are given for. From experience, it is very difficult to arrange such “extractions” because the police and courts are very reluctant to be seen as going against “Mum”, it being such a sacred status in our society. So generally you’ll find every social service dept. has a number of these situations it’s monitoring and trying to get the support of family members and gather evidence. In a couple of instances we were aided by one of the parade of “boyfriends” such “Mums” typically have who had a conscience. Of course most parents are supportive and caring of their adult diisabled offspring but I’m afraid this sort of abuse is far mre common than people may think. Really aided by the stereotype of women, especially mothers being uniformly saintly.

Spain’s top criminal court has opened a preliminary investigation into the country’s football federation president Luis Rubiales after he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips.

The court said it was opening the investigation in light of the “unequivocal nature” of Hermoso’s statements, saying it was necessary “to determine their legal significance”.
“Given the public statements made by Jennifer Hermoso, the sexual act she was subjected to by (Luis) Rubiales was not consensual,” a statement said.

Regular viewers of Songs Of Praise might remember ‘inspirational bell-ringer’ Julie McDonnell. She appeared on the BBC show on Easter Sunday, 2016, when she spoke movingly about undergoing a stem cell transplant to overcome terminal blood cancer which had inspired her to launch a campaign to help others with the life-threatening condition.
A special peal devised by fellow ringers — the ‘Julie McDonnell Doubles — was rung at her local church, historic St George’s in Brede, East Sussex, with members of the congregation asked to make a donation to raise public awareness about leukaemia…
What happened next sent shockwaves through the bell-ringing community. Julie McDonnell was arrested and later charged with the theft of £5,840 from the JustGiving platform, money donated via the fundraising site, which should have gone to cancer charities.
How much her campaign, which received local and national Press coverage, raised in total is not known but the indictment referred solely to donations, typically £5, £10 or £20, from scores of decent people around the country who just wanted to contribute something to a worthwhile cause…
On March 20, 2019, Julie McDonnell entered a plea of not guilty at Hastings Magistrates’ Court. A seemingly straightforward prosecution, however, has dragged on interminably, with the defendant sometimes unable to attend court because she claimed she was suffering from multiple conditions including muscle weakness, PTSD, neurological problems, an eating disorder, and failing mental health which has, most recently, rendered her apparently mute. Now, four years on, there have been two sensational twists in this already extraordinary story.Last week, after at least 20 hearings, seven different judges and two sets of solicitors, with the taxpayer footing the bill, the theft charge against McDonnell was dropped at Lewes Crown Court and a formal verdict of ‘not guilty’ entered because it was decided there was little prospect, in the circumstances, of the case ever going to trial — even though a succession of the aforementioned judges suspected McDonnell was malingering, ‘playing the system’, to quote one.
The bell-ringing campaign, it can also be revealed, was also based on a lie. Police discovered that Julie McDonnell had never undergone a stem cell transplant and could not, therefore, have been ‘matched’ with a compatible donor by the Anthony Nolan charity, as she had claimed.
That revelation emerged at a previous hearing but went unreported.
On Friday of last week, just hours after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) withdrew from the case, Julie McDonnell posted a picture of herself on Facebook grinning like a Cheshire cat. You couldn’t make it up, could you? A CPS spokesperson said the service had been ‘trial-ready’ since late 2019 but ‘given that these allegations date back to 2016 and it has so far not been possible to bring the case to trial, we were asked by the judge to review the case and decide whether it was in the public interest to continue. Following that review and having applied that legal test, we reluctantly decided it was no longer in the public interest to continue with the prosecution.’

Wonders never cease. A new piece by Ms Bindel in The Spectator, which mentions neither transgenderism nor men’s violence towards women and children. I now know what to do and not do if and when I should ever invite Ms Bindel and Ms Wistrich to one of my dinner parties at Buchanan Castle. I’ll get a bottle or two of Tesco branded Liebfraumilch for them alone, and ‘forget’ to chill it.
