Women in mining say industry missing out on female leadership talent

Disgraceful. The summary of the piece, at the start of the article:

“More women have entered the mining industry in the past 20 years, but they only hold about 16 per cent of top-level management positions. [J4MB: And 0% of miner positions, shouldn’t they be campaigning about that scandal?]

It is part of a global downward trend in women being hired to senior management positions since the pandemic.” [J4MB: At last, a trend – if it exists – to be welcomed! Obviously women were more affected by the pandemic. Asteroid impact to end all human life on earth, women most affected.]

An extract:

“Ms Smith said it was important the industry encouraged more women into leadership roles. [J4MB: She doesn’t say why it’s important, is the industry embarrasingly profitable, perhaps?]

“One of the things that will encourage that is men seeing women do the job … seeing is believing,” Ms Smith said.

She also said the industry needed to stop holding women to a higher standard than men.

“We’re perceived to be a higher risk candidate, [J4MB: Hmm, why might that be? The appalling track record of women in CEO roles, and the causal link between increasing gender diversity on boards and corporate financial DECLINE? No, that can’t be it… it’s a mystery, all right!] and therefore the benchmark seems to go up,” she said.

“I don’t think men have the same need [as women] to be exceptional.” ” [J4MB: Yay, let’s appoint more mediocre candidates, so more women get appointed!!!]

America’s Cup to allow social media influencers on boats

Our thanks to Jeff for this (£, Telegraph). The start of the piece:

“Social media influencers could snap up new “guest” spots on America’s Cup boats in radical changes to drive up interest in sailing’s blue riband contest.

Changes will also include at least one woman guaranteed in crews, and a minimum of two crew members – including a female sailor – being born in the team’s nation.”

Long story short? Women are about to steer the America’s Cup onto the rocks. No sporting event was ever improved by the increased presence of women.

0628 473951 – what are the chances?

[Edit 14.8.25: This has caused some confusion. To clarify, I’m looking for the chance of ANY 10-digit sequence being selected first, using all the digits 0-9. The sequence can start with a zero, there’s a 10% chance that it will.]

35-40 years ago I lived with my then young family in the beautiful Thameside town of Marlow, Bucks. Happy days.

Our phone number was 0628 473951, which uses all the digits 0-9 once. I’ve often wondered since, what are the chances of such a thing happening? I invite you to suggest the likelihood of that being a 10-digit number, based on (a) no weighting in relation to the design of UK phone numbers, and (b) the first random selection from a vast and equal number of all the digits 0-9 e.g. 0.5 is a 50% likelihood. I hope and expect that a mathematician / physicist in the Cotswolds – a part of which is sealed off currently for JD Vance‘s visit – will provide the authoritative answer.
