Nowhere in the news coverage of this case does the word ‘incel’ appear. 

One expert even uses the term ‘romantically unsuccessful’.”

“Aranda told investigators he went to the mall “looking for someone to kill.” According to the complaint, he had tried unsuccessfully to talk to women in the mall but their rejection “caused him to lash out and be aggressive.” He said he had planned to kill an adult before choosing the child instead…

Aranda’s attorney, Paul Sellers, did not raise a mental illness defense.[J4MB emphasis: Why not?] Aranda did acknowledge in response to a question from the judge that he had been in mental health court previously and completed required treatment. They did not go into details…

Aranda’s mother, Becky Aranda, and family friend Jessica Harris told reporters afterward that he had been in and out of mental health treatment while growing up in Chicago, with frequently changing diagnoses, including attention deficit disorder, depression, autism and schizophrenia. They said that as far as they know, he was homeless before the attack. They said his comprehension level is more like a 5-year-old child’s than an adult’s. (J4MB emphasis.)

Becky Aranda said her son belongs in a mental hospital, not prison. She said she last saw him in November and had been rebuffed in her efforts to visit him in jail.

“We’re trying to figure out what happened, what led him to do this,” she said. “We need answers as much as everybody else.”

Our thanks to Jeff for alerting us to this. In response to my recent blog piece Steve Hilton, former Fox News host, is running for California governor as Republican contender. An April Fools hoax by The New York Times, surely? the Daily Mail has printed the following in the Ephraim Hardcastle diary section today (p.17). I should make it clear I was never a Conservative party official, I was a business consultant who worked at their campaign HQ in London over 2006-8 and introduced a new commercial model for the autumn conferences which delivered £11.5+ million to the party’s coffers over 2007-14.

Interesting. I expect Nerys Lloyd will get a light sentence on account of not having previously been in trouble with the law, or for having children, or for simply being a woman (though the last will not be stated, it’s usually implied.) The BBC headline “Paddleboarder was guided to her death, court told” – both the BBC “journalists” are women and refer to a mother as “mum” and a father as “dad” – predictably gives no idea of the sex of the responsible person, and ignores the man who died. No mention is made in the article of Lloyd being a police officer. The Times piece (£) mentions she’s going to be sentenced today.

The end of the BBC piece:

“Nicola Wheatley’s husband Darren called Lloyd “a coward” who had “hidden behind your carefully orchestrated smoke screen”.

He added: “I hugged and kissed Nicola goodbye, she was so trusting. The next time I would see her would be to identify her body in the mortuary.

“This was not the Nicola that left our house less than 24 hours earlier but it is the face I see every day when I open my eyes.”

With audible anger in his voice he said while they “cried all day” that Christmas, Lloyd was posting pictures on social media celebrating Christmas lights with her family and friends. [J4MB emphasis. The four deaths had taken place less than two months previously.]

Lloyd was straight-faced in the dock as Mr Wheatley spoke directly to her.

Ending his speech he said: “Nerys Lloyd you are a vile person and you disgust me.”
