I have spent a significant portion of time over lockdown organising a very promising Messages for Men conference that was due to happen in recognition of International Men’s Day, this November. Unfortunately, Covid restrictions have made the event unviable so I recently cancelled the venue booking. A virtual event would be possible but since I was intending to host the event on the same day that the International Conference on Men’s Issues series of videos will start premiering on YouTube (Saturday 14th November) and also because I’m really keen to have the next Messages for Men as a live event I have decided against that course of action and will be reorganising once the Covid restrictions are either lifted entirely or not so disruptive.

I am currently working with the Save Indian Family Foundation to work out whether a march would be viable, news on this to follow soon.

The Respect Men’s Advice line reports a jump of up to 60% between emails and calls from men disclosing experiences of abuse since the lockdown period began. They, and charity Men Standing Up, also refer to the exacerbated difficulties that victimised men are experiencing when trying to escape abuse during this period.

While the article makes for distressing reading, the fact that it’s been published must surely be good news because our society needs to be made aware and accept that domestic abuse against men is a significant problem before we can ever hope it will be seriously addressed.

We have a target of 120 speakers for the conference, and we’ve just had confirmation of the 100th speaker – Alex Crosbie, a much-loved Glaswegian vlogger, “6oodfella”. His YouTube channel is here. Next week Alex will be the first interviewee for a new video interview series, Comedy Matters, on Mike Buchanan’s website Laughing at Feminists.

Finally, a reminder that Mike will be hosting the second men-only video meeting on behalf of Regarding Men tomorrow, Sunday, 2:00 p.m. Mike tells me the first one went very well, and he hopes to host the weekly meetings for a long time to come.
