On the topic of elections this began with me feeling sympathy. Then became really irritating. Basically the 14 year old son of a prospective candidate for local elections is harassed. This upsets the female candidate who withdraws. The irritating bit is the fact it then goes on and on about this sort of thing preventing women from being councillors. As if only women’s family members get flack or alternative male candidates don’t care about their sons/daughters. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c17894vz7zxo
Having worked for three different councils I can say that such things happen, no matter the sex of the councillor. Precisely because local councillors are local, often well known in the community, and people know where they live and their relatives. In fact they’re more exposed than MPs who often don’t live in their constituency but visit.
I can understand this woman’s particular sensitivity, because her daughter died as a result of a bullying campaign. I commend her son for not wanting to let his incident stop her candidacy. But the wobbling on about “women” being prevented as if the same problems never occur to men councillors is just B………ks.
