Ukraine is becoming a nation of widows and orphans as it confronts a demographic ‘catastrophe’

Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:

This is interesting, coming from a country facing acute problems. Of course being CNN it takes a feminist slant. In fact civilian casualties are remarkably low in this war and so the 100,000 plus “people” dead are overwhelmingly soldiers and male. As are the injured. And the emigrated who left and now seem likely to stay in their safe countries permanently are overwhelmingly female (they briefly mention that men weren’t and aren’t allowed to leave ). However despite the “men are dead, women most effected” slant they step away from feminist orthodoxy to point out the truth of the “biological clock”, the desire women have to be mothers and even the problem that all those dead men are potential partners and fathers, gone.

It covers the deliberate policy of concentrating recruitment and conscription on older cohorts, in contrast to Russia and indeed most other conscripting countries which target 18 plus cohorts. This move is in fact specifically to ensure there are young men left to “rebuild” the country, in recognition that their young men are the most energetic and useful. An example of when the western “luxury beliefs” start to fall apart when the luxury ceases. In Ukraine “gender equality” is likely to reflect what happened in Germany (east and west) and the USSR when the colossal loss of “man power” on the “eastern front” meant women had to do “glass cellar” jobs too. As the article says it’s not expected the millions of women who fled to comfortable western nations will want to return if both sexes have to buckle down and literally rebuild the nation. No one will say it, but the gynocentrism of happily letting millions of women leave will have massive effect on population.

It is interesting that the UK is an outlier in Europe in having no “natalist” policies as part of wanting to address falling populations. And when Reform suggest some mildly natalist policies ( ironically much like those across Europe) the feminists and the other parties invoke ” The. Handmaid”s Tale ” (fiction of course) as if they are “Fascists”. And of course cannot bring themselves to consider that men might have a part to play. The other irony is of course that it is the most overly “patriarchal” communities in our society that will have families and children. I wonder whether any of the lonely old women with cats will reflect on their “choices” when they are surrounded by children of cultures not so hostile to fathers and children. Probably not.
