Our thanks to Peter for this. An extract:
“Jones was later interviewed about her account and admitted making it up – blaming her lies on being drunk.
She told officers: ‘I got myself in such a stupid state.
‘I said things I should never have said. I am a silly woman.
‘I am disgusting. I am sorry. I am so sorry.’
In mitigation her counsel, Patrick Williamson, said she had been ‘in a difficult place’.” [J4MB: Stoke-on-Trent.]

“Saying it was ‘fortunate’ that Mr Ullah had the ‘foresight to record the conversation in the car’, the judge said it ‘does not bear thinking about’ the consequences had he not done so. ‘I have no doubt he would have been prosecuted for rape and you would have carried on your merry way,’ he added.”
These comments by the judge are really chilling. Because he’s saying that without the strong evidence Mr. Ullah had the foresight to record it is highly likely he would be convicted! Given Mr. Ullah’s word against Rachael Jones’ even the judge assumes Mr. Ullah’s honest words would not have saved him from conviction and prison. Just think of that in the context of what one might think was a story with holes in, not least because the two “other” men would never be found because they didn’t exist! Even with the recording Mr. Ullah had a 30 hour stay in a police station and by the account had to wait some time before he learned he was cleared. “Believe women” would have put a man behind bars and as he says Mz Jones would have carried on, pocketing circa £9,000 from the criminal injuries board in the process!
