Mother of eight Carla Hunt, 38, claimed nearly £15,000 of benefits for children she no longer cared for after it ‘slipped her mind’ to tell the authorities. Suspended sentence because… the usual.

Our thanks to Jeff for this. Extracts:

“In all, she collected a total of £14,742.56 in benefits she did not qualify for – and sought to blame social workers.

Hunt broke down in tears as she was sentenced to 12 weeks suspended for 12 months at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (January 30). She had been tried and convicted in her absence…

Peter Ricketts, defending, stated she was a victim of long-term domestic violence [J4MB: alleged victim, we assume – she lost custody of her children, presumably to her partner.] as well as had a number of mental health and learning difficulties which impacted her ability to understand paperwork and procedures… [J4MB translation: She’s a woman, what can you do?]

He [J4MB: Her solicitor] further submitted that Hunt did not deliberately lie to the DWP [J4MB: No, she just didn’t tell them the truth, a totally different matter!] and confirmed she had never previously committed a crime.

Hunt was ordered to carry out 20 days of rehabilitation activity and pay a £154 victim surcharge.

The Chair of the Bench said: ‘We have thought long and hard about this today. We are not going to lecture you, you know what you did was wrong.

‘We are going to suspend the prison sentence. Keep your nose clean, keep out of trouble and you won’t go to prison.’ “

  1. ‘We are going to suspend the prison sentence. Keep your nose clean, keep out of trouble and you won’t go to prison.’ Of course the truth is “It’s government policy to close women’s prisons and we’re not going to do that by actually sending women to prison, so it is your lucky day”. “Two tier” justice is written into the “Bench Book” (the guidance issued to Magistrates and Judges) treating criminals differently based on their Sex. No wonder the occasional enterprising male prisoner changes from Bill to Betty.

  2. Of course the end of the “2 child cap” will boost the amounts of benefits to mothers of lots of children just think of how much dosh Carla could have amassed with her 8 children . One can fair see that the end of the “cap” will have many a “mum” looking at a windfall boost in “lifestyle”. Rather like this just published (republished) Mirror story Man tells wife he’s entitled to half her salary – and everyone agrees – The Mirror The mum will see the extra money as for her not “the family”. Though in the benefits world she’s married to the taxpayer not an individual man.

I liked the Mirror story because its about actual “equality” rather than the lopsided version of feminism. I always think the irony of this that in far away countries (and a few boroughs and towns in Britain) where Islamic law holds sway. It is explicitly the case that the man earns to support a family and his supposed partner earns for herself. Indeed if, as is tragically common in many regions, the husband is killed then it falls to the eldest sons to support their whole family. This leading to a widespread problem of teenage boys supporting their grandmothers, mothers and sisters in many war torn areas. That darned “patriarchy” strikes again.
