  1. On the topic of Marriage I was very interested in this. Finnish research from a large sampling. New study highlights distinct divorce patterns between same-sex and opposite-sex couples Perhaps it should be no surprise that female same sex partnerships are the most likely to end and are the most short lived. Followed by male same sex and then heterosexual unions. “The general findings revealed a clear hierarchy in divorce risk. Approximately 40 percent of female couples divorced within the first ten years of their legal union. This rate was significantly higher than the 24 percent observed for male couples. Opposite-sex couples had the lowest rate, with 21 percent divorcing within the same timeframe.”

However the multivariate analysis throws up some interesting patterns. Perhaps surprisingly for all three types the higher the income of the min breadwinner the more likely the union to last. However the higher the income of the secondary breadwinner the more likely a divorce/split in heterosexual unions. Yet “In contrast, a higher income for the secondary earner in same-sex marriages tended to stabilize the union. This was particularly evident for male couples.” In short similar incomes are a positive for same sex unions but the reverse is true in heterosexual unions.

There are other interesting findings to do with Church and belief (Finland is not so apathetically disinterested as the UK) appear to be potent factors.

The authors are clearly feminist and clearly are confused that some of their feminist hypotheses appear not to play a part. Inevitably saying more research is needed. However given the size of the data set the broad conclusions appear robust.

One surprising conclusion is of course that the difference between male homosexual unions longevity and heterosexual ones is not that great yet that of female homosexual unions is much higher. Link that to the fact that close to 80% of divorces are initiated by wives. And contrary to received wisdom it is the male of the species that is more committed to their partnerships than the female!
