Sir Philip Davies

Sir Philip Davies will surely need no introduction to followers of this blog. The Tory MP for Shipley until the last general election, he spoke at several ICMIs. After the first, ICMI16 in London, Jeremy Corbyn (then Labour party leader) called on PM Theresa May to withdraw the whip. The Lib Dem leader – I can’t recall which – did likewise. Philip’s later achievements include inaugurating the annual International Men’s Day debates in the House of Commons, despite the determined opposition of the then recently-elected Jess Phillips. During one of them he covered MGM, pointing out inter alia that performing non-therapeutic circumcision is a crime under OAPA1861. Needless to say, the debate attracted zero media coverage.

We’ve exchanged a few emails since he left office. I was looking for some information on Philip’s website when I happened to notice this:

“In September 2024, Davies announced he had undergone a quadruple heart bypass on the NHS following a heart attack.”

Startled by this, I emailed Philip and asked for an update. His response, which he’s cleared me to post here, was this:

“Hi Mike,

Yes, I had at least two heart attacks in August 2024 (without knowing I had) [J4MB: a month after the last general election, at which Philip lost his seat] and eventually went to A&E at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester (a heart specialist hospital).

I was in a very bad way and they weren’t sure if there was anything they could do to help, but thankfully one of the best heart surgeons in the world – Prof Venkat – was at the hospital and he gave me a quadruple heart bypass.  I owe him everything – he is a genius.

I am all good now thanks, now that I have been replumbed!

It was a grim time.  I was in hospital for a month, but am feeling better than ever now thankfully!

Hope all is well with you.

Best wishes

Philip
