Forced out for saying fireman: Hero who allowed colleagues to use the term ‘fireman’ after woman complained loses unfair dismissal case
Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
An example of the corrosive effect of insisting women be treated as special. The end result, the woman in question leaves getting £50,000 pay out and a respected fireman is hounded out of his job. I noted this quote from the Telegraph version of the story. From the female “firefighter”.
“I have challenged the term fireman, with a smile and a groan, every time it is spoken, however, on one occasion a firefighter on my watch replied with: ‘I will stop saying fireman when they stop specifically recruiting only firewomen.” In other words he recognised that recruitment was dedicated to getting females in, because they are female. I have commented in the past on how the reduction in physical standards in order to legally favour women in recruitment ended the many forms of help we’d been able to call on GM Fire Service to perform for elderly and disabled people, which required some “big strong lads”. Usually failures of Lifts in the many blocks of flats in the district.
Even now the vast majority of “firefighters” are men and it is unsurprising that generally in conversation (even reporting in local media) “Firemen/man” is still the common term used. Such stuff simply undermines both the morale of a service and in fact reduces the public service they do. The trivial in “banter” become a cause celebre. The old “mind your language in front of the ladies” becomes enshrined in a sort of “law”. Yet we know that particularly in dangerous or difficult jobs bonding over banter and “gallows humor” is vital. Having worked in female dominated health and social care, in both staff on the “front line” have both banter and “gallows humour” too. Not suitable to be repeated in polite society. Yet its men only put under such pressure.
