TheyWorkForYou: Scottish Parliament. Views from a Green MSP, Lorna Slater.

Our thanks to Douglas for this. Lorna Slater is a Canadian member of the Scottish parliament. Douglas writes:

“The bit that really gets me, is the idea that having kicked males out of higher education, she now wants to kick them out of their fallback: apprenticeships. But there is more not-so-hidden in her words!”

  1. As a point of fact in England and Wales the sex split in apprenticeships has hovered around 50:50 for a couple of decades. With the sorts of different choices she identifies. I doubt that Scotland is that different in fact in terms of the sex split in numbers. She is also ignorant about what people can earn. I have a friend who is a hairdresser, worked hard and now has three salons and a thriving business. In a sector where there are many like her. So money can be made in the occupations if you want to prioritise that. Such service sectors really expanded this century and lots of money can made. As I’ve repeated in comments I left secondary school in 1975, there was a push to get girls into traditionally male “trades” then. After 50 years of such stuff I’d say its pretty clear that generally girls and boys just choose different occupations. “Quotas” would simply reduce the number of apprentices as they’d never be met except by reducing the intake of male “fitters” to match the small number of female applicants (vice versa for social care for instance). Result; labour shortages. As happened in the RAF!

  2. Why thousands of NHS GPs are cutting their hours despite plan to increase access to doctors | GPs | The Guardian “Stress and childcare” apparently. And one can guess why it is despite training more and more doctors only one in 13 newly qualified GPs works full time (for the NHS).

“Female GPs, younger GPs, UK-qualified GPs, and GPs in London and the south-east were the most likely groups to be qualified but not working in the NHS”

So that means younger female GPs particularly in London. Could it possibly be that they are also the ones most likely to “bag” a well paid partner too. Apparently working three days or less qualifies you for free childcare. Though the article rumbles on about flexibility the truth is that anyone I know has seen the demise of the “family doctor” who knows you and your family. Instead practices have a dozen part time GPs and its pretty random which one you get “oh Dr…….. just does Tuesdays” “I’m sorry Dr. …… does do school holidays”. Result you get to see someone who only knows you from your “notes”, or often you don’t “see” them at all its a phone appointment.

But then the proportion of GPs trained has steadily increased due to “positive action” so it must all be to the good!

  3. Why Rachel Reeves is ‘sick of the mansplaining’ | The Independent And of course Rachel plays the poor me card. I can’t remember a time when there hasn’t been intense scrutiny and speculation about up coming announcements from a Chancellor. Unsurprising for the second most important office of state And the one who generally is dipping their hands into every pocket and purse in the land. Could it possibly be “the boys” are just doing their job?
