  1. As a good example of the wilful whining Ben Shephard called out over gender equality debate So it seems men’s toiletries tend to be cheaper. Que moans about a “tax” which is of course nonsense because there is no such Tax, though I’m sure the present Gov. wouldn’t mind such a source of income. I started my working life in shoe retail. Where women’s products were far more varied in styles and colour choices. Overall the men’s lines included comparatively few “fashion” lines and were mostly easily carried over into the next “season”(or the same season the next year). Consequently the women’s shoes had a great deal more “wastage” in terms of product that needed to be got rid of in Sales, sold on to bargain retailers (or poorer countries in fact). Much the same will be true if one surveys the racks of Deodorants, shampoos, shower gels etc. The considerably greater variety of scents, styles, formulations (softer, added moisturizer, “added Argon” etc.) and packaging all increase the risk of waste as well as increasing the cost per item. Added to this is the fact that the price has to cover costs, but is based on the experience of how much the customer will pay! Should women en masse want to pay less they will find this is perfectly possible if they don’t pay the prices for all this variety; ie. they get used to the much smaller range of choices in the Men’s products. There is no special Tax at all and the market reflects demand.

But of course that relies on the women on the programme and in general doing something, rather than whining “poor me”. What is most fascinating in the article is the reported comments, non of the women seem to consider not buying their “favourite”, rather whinging about it while willingly paying the high price for it. Basically their actions prove to the producers and retailers that they are perfectly willing to pay the prices asked.

And poor old Ben is castigated for the obvious suggestion, why not buy the cheaper stuff? Gender gap? Gender Tax? what BS.
