Divorce Plunged in Kentucky. Equal Custody for Fathers Is a Big Reason Why.

Our thanks to Jim for this interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal, although it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt in places, where feminists present the threat of abuse of children as always coming from fathers, while we’ve long known it usually comes from mothers. Likewise, mothers are more likely to kill their children than fathers.

  1. The trajectory of Divorce in this country seems to be heavily influenced by the housing market. Unsurprising to an economist given for most couples this is their largest “asset”. It is noticeable that in periods of a busy market with rapid price rises divorces rise where as in a stagnant market they fall. Getting hold of the house in an active market is a good deal (and we know who usually “gets the house”) because the asset is worth much more even months after the “settlement” even if not fully owned the equity in the asset has risen. In a slower market with little prospect of a rapid gain in equity , well its not so attractive. Given the “custody” of children effectively gives that parent the family home it is a significant factor in custody battles.

Of course the feminists weigh in with “domestic violence” because this hooks into the deep gynocentrism of many “western” societies. It was precisely this issue that was played in a big way in Australia to repeal the law that gave a presumption of equal parental responsibility. A “progressive law” when passed over a decade ago because it established the responsibility of fathers for their children, in theory giving the feminists what they wanted, ending the idea only the mother has to care for children. But of course equality, even theoretical given the Australian Courts still tended to favour the mother in practice, is not what its about. For all the hullabaloo and exaggeration the reality is to increase the leverage of wives in divorce.
