  1. Of course literally over a Century of Sociological research confirms his evaluation, as does simple observation of everyday life! And yet we seem even more attached to the frankly fanciful notion of romantic love than previous generations. Despite all the evidence. Having taken my wife to see “The Materialists” is was a little refreshing to see the “Matchmakers” arranging dates between the rich of NYC be so cynical as they dealt with the “lists” of their Clients. Inevitably the materialistic “heroine” eventually “falls” for the penniless actor (she’ll ditch him as soon as something better comes along dismissed my wife in a surprising comment given she’s a sucker for romances). However overall it was surprisingly honest about the reality (unusually the things the men do such as operations to be taller, appear richer or have the right education are exposed) with the talk of “love” coming well after the “clients” have got their dream partner following a long process of dating and “sifting”. In my experience men seem quickly to sort out the “league” they are in and adjust their behaviour accordingly. Or maybe its simply the learning from a whole parade of rejection. In a way because women don’t approach, and therefore rarely get such brutal feedback its not surprising they have little notion of their “league”. Living in a society dedicated it seems to keeping them in a fantasy land for as long as possible. Frankly I do it too, I may think “you look like mutton dressed as lamb” or a pantomime dame but shamefully that’s not what I say as a female colleague shows off her “look”. Well you soon learn no woman actually wants an honest opinion.
