  1. I know how things got this bad down under. I lived many years in Australia, though I wasn’t born there. Australia has a long-lasting tradition of borrowing ideas, attitudes and so on from northern hemisphere countries, without thinking through whether what they’re proposing to adopt is suitable for the country, or for that matter a good thing anywhere. Things are just taken on wholesale, in that bland, unthinking, middle-class way that they have. Just so long as it makes them feel that their country is “progressive” and “up to date” and “modern”. That’s the motivation. Bettina Arndt is one of the rare ones.

I live in England now, the country of my birth. More years here than there. England – a small country where everyone lives on top of one another, and most people don’t seem to know what they’re doing half the time. Yet somehow it all kinda works, and I feel at home here. Just so long as we can be rid of Starmer, and recover some English common sense in high places. But don’t get me started on that one.
