  1. I’m sure much the same pattern is true here in the UK. Not least because men are far more likely to do a degree that is valuable for a job and are more likely to do that job full time. So more likely to reach the threshold for payment. Unsurprisingly degrees in Eng. Lit. etc. are much less likely to lead to good jobs, particularly if the holders are interested in “work life balance” or want to spend time “finding themselves”. One of the ways of interpreting the higher % of females going for further degrees is perhaps to put off entering the real world a little bit longer, or maybe I’m a bit cynical. And underpinning it all is the still deeply held expectation that a male with a female partner will adhere to the “what’s his is ours” from paying for meals out to dealing with debt. The what’s hers is hers” part of the equation doesn’t apply to debts! In a way the Victorian view that a male had to be guarantor for any females debts (husband or father or male relative) still applies informally in the way the male will be assumed to become responsible for at least “helping” with her debt. The reverse, with the female partner helping with her male partner’s debts, is actually defined as a form “financial abuse”!
