Female firefighters – coming soon to a fire near you? Fingers crossed!

In the light of recent reports about the impact of DEI initiatives on efforts to fight the wildfires in California, we thought we’d link to a piece we published in 2013, with the contents of an email from a (male) firefighter who described his first-hand experience of the downgrading of physical tests over 2000/1, to enable the Fire Service to hire more women.

  1. As I’ve commented before its not just the rescue during fires that has been compromised. Firemen also did a lot of non-emergency rescue work for disabled and elderly people as well as some “heavy lifting” jobs for Social Care. Particularly important in areas where much of the housing is high rise and tenement style blocks of flats. The Firefighters often came to the aid of people at the request of Social Services. Usually cheerfully. This ended as all tasks that required big strong men had to end because the service claimed “equipment” meant it wasn’t a requirement. It also had an effect on disabled people in work because whereas disabled people were advised to remain in a designated safe area until evacuated by the “Firefighters” it was changed to they couldn’t work on hihger floors or had to transfer to rather rickerty rescue devices supposedly evacuated by colleagues. In effect restricting employment. Thus the effect is actually far reaching.
