Japan zoo bans solo male visitors to prevent flirtation, citing family and couple discomfort

“Misa Mama [The zoo’s director] pointed out that since the zoo’s inception, the majority of its visitors had been families or couples. However, some unaccompanied male guests had approached and attempted to strike up conversations with both her and female patrons.”

  1. Japan has an alarmingly low fertility rate and an aging population. If even flirting is now a no-no in Japan (much less anything more serious) then that explains everything.

  2. This sort of thing is not confined to Japan . On a recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery I noticed a sign in the unisex toilet encouraging me to complain to staff if I experienced unwanted “attention” during my visit.
