Women’s Justice Board begins plans to send fewer women to prison

A government press release published yesterday.

Only 5 per cent of prisoners in the UK are women. Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said, “The simple truth is that we are sending too many women to prison.” There is no suggestion that too many men are being sent to prison.

The press release makes a point of the self-harming rate being higher among female prisoners than male prisoners. No mention of the fact that as male prisoners outnumber female prisoners about 20:1, more men than women self-harm.

  1. here we get yet more “two tier” treatment https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/jan/21/prisons-minister-aims-to-close-one-womens-jail-in-england-and-wales Way at the end of this is tucked in the truth that its mens prisons where the biggest crisis is. Where in fact though self harm may be proportionately lower more men are actually self harming and of course where there is a big problem of suicide. “Many women offenders have suffered huge amounts of trauma. Often the way they mask that is through drugs, alcohol, bad relationships” a good description of a huge proportion of the inmates of the male transit prison (where they go after sentencing and prior to going to their longer term prison) in the area I worked
