Boeing disbands DEI department to focus on a ‘merit-based performance system’

Good news. An extract:

“Boeing remains committed to recruiting and retaining top talent and creating an inclusive work environment where every teammate around the world can perform at their best while supporting the company’s mission,” a company statement said, adding it operates “a merit-based performance system with procedures aimed at encouraging an equality of opportunity, not of outcomes.”

  1. Given Boeings troubles lately reflecting poor quality control in engineering and construction this may reflect concern at its faltering performance as much as campaigning by those opposed the DEI. This quote from its DEI champion (now left) shows the problem “”Our team strived every day to support the evolving brilliance and creativity of our workforce,” As always there are the overblown superlatives that suggest a lack of common sense, I’m sure those flying in Boeings many high tech. products would be better served by a workforce of excellence rather than one “evolving brilliance”. Its instructive that the article waffles on about DEI and diversity as the goal for companies, rather than whether or not this diversity is of any use in advancing the actual business. I suspect behind closed doors its the latter that has influenced decisions to ditch quotas and special measures.

  2. It won’t stop the rot at boeing which has been there for some time.

Boeing has been doing too much subcontracting( like many businesses) and you can see the results especially when combined with DEI( spirit airlines anyone?). They haven’t got rid of DEI, they have hidden it in a broader HR team( according to their article). Getting rid of experience engineers to save money doesn’t help either.

Boeing should have also fired the decision makers who brought in DEI, because their judgement is very unsound. I also suspect that there has been influence from certain shareholders known for pushing this agenda( but that is the devils pact you make when you willing take money from investors without due diligence of their background)

note the linked article had a follow up article

“how to stop your company caving in to anti DEI critics”

that shows you that their( industries) are doubling down.

I’m not holding my breath that there is significant change in this…
