Labour to end BBC licence fee prosecutions because most of the prosecuted are women

Ridiculous (Times, £). Lisa Nandy (Culture Secretary) and Shabana Mahmood (Justice Secretary) are understood to agree that failure to pay the licence should no longer be a criminal offence. They are concerned that women are being “disproportionately” targeted.

  1. Well the silver lining on this may be that many more women won’t pay their license fee and the BBC will fade away (though with the income of a small country its going to take a lot of fading). Though the data it difficult to get exact data. In general its clear that “free to view” broadcast TV from the BBC, Channel 4 (yes just why to we have two state broadcasters in the UK?) and commercial channels have a largely female audience. So its no surprise that women get “caught” viewing more than men. In fact the situation is probably more “gendered” with male partners and husbands paying for the license fee as well as pay for view channels with sport content with the woman of the household actually being the main consumer of broadcast TV.

  2. And from the BBC the empathy gap. BBC apologises to Abbington over Strictly as Pernice cleared of abuse claims | Evening Standard Its all concern about Abbington of course despite the review finding no evidence of all accusations (17 apparently) apart from 6 about “feedback” and “banter”. So the chap loses his “job” and goes back to Italy on the basis that Abbington couldn’t take harsh feedback in a competition. All too often in such circumstances “HR” decides to try to be “nice” and offer complainants all sorts of support even where there is no substance. Creating in the process the impression that there was somehow some substance to the complaint after all. Net result the chap goes into “exile” and female “luvvy” is pandered to. I gather that in the fist “dance off” this year a young swimmer was ejected by the panel, really because the other dance off candidate is female and they already have “too many” male contestants.

I must admit to having some admiration for Anton Du Beke, who continued to work with Pernice despite the campaigning to “cancel” him. And apparently was the only “judge” who showed integrity in voting to keep the better performer, the swimmer.
