  1. There is something really engaging in Pearl’s “wide eyed” common sense always delivered with good humour and good manners. I’m not familiar with James Whale but in this he really does exemplify the problem. Though he appears to agree with many points Pearl makes, he cannot help but keep thinking of ways of praising women, from Mrs Whale to past “Bosses”, mothers etc. Much of it in the classic hyperbole of praise given for, about and to women, and (with the possible exception of Margaret Thatcher) probably undeserved. So unlike the much younger Pearl he seems incapable of accepting that females can be anything other than mainly saintly, with the more obnoxious feminists being a sort of aberrant misguided bunch who really “mean well”. In short precisely the bumptiously chivalrous attitude that has seen Conservative men wave through all manner of blatantly discriminatory policies that are unequal and often seriously undermine conservative social values. A parade of “own goals” for Conservatives, which would be funny if it weren’t for the real world consequences, such as being Europe’s leader for “broken” and “chaotic” families and therefore a leader in the proportion of our children in care and reporting poor mental health!
