  1. Good for Bettina Ardnt and her allies for organising this and weathering the inevitable storm. Here this story ‘If that person hadn’t changed their mind, then Caroline Flack might still be with us today’: The inside story of three hours, and a fateful decision, that friends blame for her tragic suicide is revealed by KATIE HIND | Daily Mail Online illustrates the double standard. Since her death there have been many such articles which effectively say different rules should apply to attractive women in the media. Hardly a surprise. However it is heartening that the top rated comments all point out she had assaulted her boyfriend in his sleep with a bedside light, and had she been a man so hitting his girlfriend there would be no question he’d be arrested and charged. These comments all point out she was responsible for her actions and the law has to be applied. In short they agree with the core value of Bettina Ardnt’s conference that the law has to be applied equally. No matter who is the complainant and who is accused.

I doubt very much that our society is anywhere near being able to summon up much sympathy for males, nor abandon its extravagant sympathies for females. However the comments on the Caroline Flack story do give me hope there is still some belief in fairness, due process and a requirement for laws to be “without fear or favour”. I hope Bettina’s conference provides a voice for this in Australia.
