  1. I note that the men have to be screened, I recall that this was declared against the Equality Act by the EHRC after a case brought by a Welsh group. That being said Womens Aid is, like many supposedly “national” charities, a form of franchise arrangement with a large well renumerated head office but most of the work done by locally run charities. Particularly outside the big conurbations with their long history of left politics it is often the case that these charities do try to support men or are supportive of men initiatives. This is often because, like the founder Erin Pizzey, their workers and volunteers come across the realities of male victims. Just as local police do. If one looks at where there are or have been police campaigns and voluntary organizations they are almost invariably in shire counties or the smaller cities.
The well funded and resourced national head offices have done a consistently successful job of suppressing this, rendering it “invisible”.

  2. You are quite right. As Chiswick refuge. Womensaid was in 1974 formed from about 40 groups that had been inspired by Erin’s Work. This “federation” is the basis of the sort of franchising structure womensaid has. Refuge remained a single charity with a smaller network of Refuges. Of course basically all such services owe their beginings to Erin’s pioneering work centered on the Chiswick refuge from 1971. The genius of the “federation” was that it grouped all the often very different new services under one umbrella, giving the London HQ Womensaid the claim to speak for “all” and of course being able use their coordination to get conformity to their ideological line.
