International Men’s Day debate (yesterday)
A tip of the hat to They work for you for the transcript of yesterday’s International Men’s Day debate in Westminster Hall. Nick Fletcher introduced the debate, Philip Davies MP in the chair. We can safely assume few MPs attended the debate, as always.
International Women’s Day debates are invariably held in the more prestigious House of Commons chamber, and reliably packed with MPs every year.
Far too much of the debate (most of it) was taken up by female MPs (from all political parties) doing what they always do in the IMD debates with regards to men’s issues, and male suicide in particular, victim blaming – presenting men’s issues as issues resulting from men not speaking up about their problems, or men having mental health issues, rather than considering how the pressures on them that lead to suicide could be reduced or eliminated altogether – denying them access to their children after family breakdowns being one obvious example.

Well, the Capita recruitment campaigns for the armed services are a flop, could it possibly be advertising and recruiting with diversity being the priority and actively excluding white men from some recruitments has resulted in a mess https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12777467/Soldiers-join-weakened-Parachute-Regiment-amid-manpower-crisis. With the new President of Argentina “saber rattling” about the Falklands maybe, just maybe, it’s time to drop the fantasies. Clearly in sport the reality of sex and gender differences appears to be pushing through https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-12777441/SARAH-VINE-Trans-women-female-football-team. You’d think if this is clear in sport, fortunately not life or death, the armed services could get it, where feminists’ fantasies put lives and our security at risk.

Alarming 17-fold spike in number of Brits left undiscovered after dying at home: Experts blame massive rise on ‘societal breakdown’

Another example of the need for a “minister” for men. Like “rough sleeping” men are disadvantaged by services being designed for “vulnerable” people (which mainly means women) and effectively ignoring men’s specific needs. Though not a complete answer to this growing problem mainly effecting men it would help if our social care for older people services were not completely designed around old women. In a way this reflected the fact that men used to die pretty much just after retirement thus those living into old age were overwhelmingly women (and of course they also were using services from age 60) so there were few older men. But this has changed with men, fortunately living beyond retirement. A decade ago Age Concern (as it was then) did work on this as a key growing problem. Of course nothing was done about how statutary services target their attention nor on trying to make services “male friendly”. Just like homelessness services men are literally left out. Of course services can’t fill every gap by our “broken society” but they could do a lot more https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-12776125/Alarming-17-fold-spike-number-Brits-left-undiscovered-dying-home-Experts-blame-massive-rise-societal-breakdown.
