A tip of the hat to They work for you for the transcript of yesterday’s International Men’s Day debate in Westminster Hall. Nick Fletcher introduced the debate, Philip Davies MP in the chair. We can safely assume few MPs attended the debate, as always.
International Women’s Day debates are invariably held in the more prestigious House of Commons chamber, and reliably packed with MPs every year.
Far too much of the debate (most of it) was taken up by female MPs (from all political parties) doing what they always do in the IMD debates with regards to men’s issues, and male suicide in particular, victim blaming – presenting men’s issues as issues resulting from men not speaking up about their problems, or men having mental health issues, rather than considering how the pressures on them that lead to suicide could be reduced or eliminated altogether – denying them access to their children after family breakdowns being one obvious example.

I do think the point about the causes of many male suicides was eloquently made in the Video of the boots protest outside the Australian Federal Parliament.
One of the great fears of the feminists is that such voices and ideas are silenced. Keeping the development of social policy firmly within the “Westminster bubble” and making it “top down” from Gov. (which in truth is the Civil Servants unless the elected members show particular gumption) allows “popular” understandings of equality, mental health etc. to be ignored or bypassed. Hence such things as “special courts” without juries, who it seems all too often apply some common sense(aka “rape myths”). I’m sure feminists in Parliament will do their upmost to keep IMD in a box.
