BBC: “Sacked MoD Police officer wins sexist fitness case”

She failed a fitness test multiple times and could not complete an alternate test but sacking her for that reason is ‘sexist’ because she is a woman. Does anyone want MOD police who are unfit and physically incapable? It must make sense to someone but on reflection I think it is sexist, just not in the way she claims. Imagine a man who failed to achieve some essential qualification for a job. Imagine that his failure is related to something women on average are better at such as manual dexterity or verbal skills. Would there be any chance whatsoever when as a result he lost his job of suing on the grounds of sex discrimination?

Whenever test standards are lowered to suit women (for example the fire brigade ) the one group that suffers is the public who now get a poorer service .We seem to live in a world where the priority is to provide people with work simply because they want it, irrespective of whether they are able to actually do it .

  2. We can see where this leads by simply observing our police “services” and some Fire Services. Because this sort of ruling leads to abandoning standards or making them very low. So first a height requirement goes, then strength requirements, then fitness requirements on entry, then fitness requirements to be maintained in service. Because you can’t have “alternative tests” that exclude men (for not all men are tall etc.) or exclude older workers (because of course Age is a protected characteristic too ) or small or disabled people. Before long it becomes untenable to have such tests except the very most limited, and we end up with such scenes where 5 or 6 Police officers are needed to detain 14 year old girls or a man with prosthetic legs, and who have no chance of catching a young criminal escaping accross back gardens. The interplay of case law means its pretty much impossible to ensure such services employ fit people capable of dealing with situations without “back up”. This is why we don’t see the “bobby” on the beat, because that required one or two tall imposing individuals who had the presence to project authority and ability to “handle” themselves. Just as the Fire service relied on big strong guys. In a sort of race to the bottom we end up with ineffective services.
