I’ll be controversial here. Alana’s “choice” to settle down in a supposed traditional wife role is basically all about comfortable upper middle class people. All very “aspirational”, just as much as the “have it all feminists” her former compatriots in the media industries. Out in the real world (for instance my offspring and those oof my friends and colleagues) there is little prospect of a single income affording a modest family home either buying or renting and so both have to work. And I’m not talking about a nice cottage in the Cotswolds. Now someone suggesting the sorts of tax regimes on the continent that give real incentives to family formation by directing help to married couples and their children might have my respect but Alana is just a variation on the “have it all” media women, usually backed up by “hired help” and a husband or partner in a well paid job that means they are also conveniently out of the way most of the time.
