Why ‘Progress’ is Bad for Women – Mary Harrington, a thoughtful, intelligent feminist (I’ve never put those words together before)

An interesting interview (video, 1:12:28) by Triggernometry of Mary Harrington, a thoughtful, intelligent feminist (I’ve never put those words together before). It’s in a different league to the embarrassing propaganda fest which was their Julie Bindel interview. Bindel wasn’t challenged once.

Ms Harrington’s book Feminism Against Progress has just been published in the UK, Amazon UK link here.

  1. A remarkable interview about what must be a remarkable book. I presume Mary Harrington will be no platformed for this set of heresies. On a hopeful point she is one of those who points out that the feminism that gets put into policy and statute is that of upper middle class women. As she points out the same sort who were excluding women from dangerous work, imprisonment for crime, temperance and in the US prohibition (and here pub hours) and proscribing prostitution (Oscar Wilde falling foul of that ). In other words a relatively small group.

  2. Thoughtful and intelligent is accurate. Unlike 99.9% of feminists, Harrington has correctly identified that feminism is bad for women and is honest and courageous enough to say so. (But, of course, some of us have been saying that for some time). My full reaction to her interview would require a blog post, which I must write. However, my key observation is that this woman’s gynocentrism is still firmly in place. Her concern is still entirely for women. After 60 years of men being trashed by feminism, it isn’t good enough to turn around and say “oh, we’ve discovered that this is bad for women, so let’s go back to something more traditional”….and expect men to just facilitate the revised game plan – as per usual – and without any sort of “truth and reconciliation” that is so badly needed. Forgiveness is conditional upon repentance, which requires acknowledgement of one’s error. I don’t always agree with Paul Elam, but one thing he got right is that the only anti-feminism worth anything is anti-gynocentrism, and currently Harrington, like Joanna Williams, isn’t anywhere close to that.
