Our thanks to Ken for this, which relates to the Council on Aging Senior Center in Falmouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Jill Irving Bishop (seniorcenter@falmouthma.gov) is the senior centre director, Paul Plasinski the men’s group leader. Long story short, another men’s group treated abysmally by one or more women. An extract from the article:
Ms. Bishop told the Enterprise last week it is most appropriate if the men’s group speakers focus on men’s issues, while speakers of a general interest should speak at Coffee and Conservation, which is open to all the center’s members, men and women.
“She wants our suggestions for guest speakers in advance,” Mr. Plisinski told the group at the library. “She says that speakers they ‘deem appropriate’ will be approved.” [J4MB emphasis – hopefully Mr. Plisinski will tell the passive-aggressive Ms. Bishop to take a long walk off a short pier.]
This generated a lively discussion of privacy, free speech and control over their choices. When contacted yesterday, Thursday, December 1, Ms. Bishop was not immediately available for comment.
Several men called for a complete rejection of the three options, saying they should create a counterproposal.
“We need a third option where we take the best ideas from their proposals and put them with our ideas about what we want,” Randy Johnson said.
That was met with several men suggesting they simply say no.
