Now that our YouTube channel is up and running again, we can provide a link to the House of Commons International Men’s Day debate (video, 1:26:29) which I attended two days ago. Most of the MPs in the chamber (including Penny Mordaunt) hot-footed it out of the chamber when they heard the title of the ensuing debate. For most of the debate I was the only person in the Visitors’ Gallery, it must have a capacity for 300+ people.

The debate was depressingly insubstantial. The only issue covered at length (of the 20 issues in our manifesto) was suicide, admittedly a very important issue. Most of the MPs victim-blamed suicidal men for not seeking help, rather than trying to understand the reasons that drive men to become suicidal in the first place, and the state’s contributions to those reasons.

The well-known campaigner Kursat Pekgoz filed a Title IX complaint against Stanford University in 2019. The complaint was endorsed by five individuals affiliated with Stanford. Warren Farrell and Edward Stephens submitted supportive statements. The Biden administration will now investigate Stanford University for discrimination against boys and men, perhaps an indication that opposing misandry in colleges has become a bipartisan issue. The related letter from the US Department of Education is here. Some allegations were dismissed, Kursat intends to appeal those. We wish him well with all his efforts.

Against this setting, a backlash against women’s rights is underway around the world. Regressive new laws are exacerbating impunity for perpetrators of domestic violence, governments are using force against femicide and gender-based violence protestors, and women’s rights organizations are being increasingly marginalized.

Therese Coffey MP is Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. One can see for oneself why she might be very involved with food – somehow don’t see her having too many Rural Affairs though…

Credit where it’s due though, I didn’t realise that even The Environment itself was discriminating against women, or that girls were being sent out to ‘find sources of water’. One learns something new every day!
