An interesting example of “pretty power”. There is after a truly vast “beauty” industry based on the advantages gained by looking “sexy” and “young”. But of course it goes much deeper than this. Far from just being about the well-known advantages of looking attractive, it’s part of the now well-researched advantaging of females at all levels of education. As the research reported here, it’s not that males are marked down, it’s the females receiving inflated scores (something research has found to be common to many countries) compared to males and the “blind” scores.
This should concern everyone for although it is disappointing for individual girls to find their assessed grades are not achieved at exams, and may mean they struggle in work where they have to perform in a real-world situation, it’s also bad for society if there’s a high % of the population with an over-inflated belief in their competence, both in terms of the resultant widespread frustration but also in jobs where issues of safety rely on accurate analysis.
The Victorians conceived of men living in the “real world” while women often escaped into a fantasy world. It seems it’s much the same now.
