Spreading happiness at Go Outdoors

I just visited the Bedford branch of Go Outdoors, an excellent store with friendly staff and prices that sometimes compare well with Amazon. While paying for my purchases with a credit card, the young lady at the till asked me if I wanted to tap in a 20p donation to a charity, by the simple expedient of tapping on the “Yes” button of the payment device. I asked what the charity was, we then had the following exchange:

She: Er, it’s a charity to get more women into sport.

Me: Do we NEED more women in sport?

She: Er, I don’t know.

Me: Is there anything STOPPING more women getting into sport, without this company’s help?

She: Er, I don’t know.

Me: Has anyone or anything ever stopped YOU getting into sports?

She: Er, no.

Me: So the whole thing’s a scam, then?

She: Er, I don’t know.

Me: Do you ever support men’s charities?

She: Er, I don’t think so.

Needless to say, I declined to pay the 20p donation. One does what one can to spread happiness every day.
