For some years now I’ve owned Canon EOS cameras, but my interest in photography has been boosted by advice from our Technical Director Tom Caulfield, a former commercial pilot and professional photographer. Some of his work is available on his own website.
Tom has been responsible for all the ICMI videos since the 2016 conference in London. He runs a 90-minute-long men-only weekly “photography and videography” meeting on behalf of XY Crew, formerly Regarding Men. We meet at 7.00pm GMT every Wednesday, and it’s always one of the highlights of my week. Membership of XY Crew is from only USD5.00 (about £4.00) pcm.
The meeting is open to people with cameras or none (it’s amazing what good photos can be taken on a smartphone, with a little effort). But Tom has a range of Canon EOS cameras, as do some of the attendees including myself (the Canon 760D, since you ask) which helps when we’re facing challenges. Tom invariaby has solutions to every challenge. Why not join us?
I recently researched the market for a monthly photography magazine. One stood out head-and-shoulders above the rest, PhotoPlus, which happens to be an independent magazine for Canon EOS owners, pleasingly. One of the things that impressed me from the outset was that the four key contributors are all of the male persuasion:
- Peter Travers, Editor
- Dan Mold, Technique editor
- James Paterson, Technique writer
- Rod Lawton, Technical writer
The content of the magazine is terrific, there’s a refreshing absence of pandering to female sensibilities and narcissism, which you find in most other photography magazines, usually manifesting itself in undue praise being heaped on poor photographs taken by women.
I’ve taken out an annual subscription, the cheapest I could find was the digital edition on Amazon, £44.99p.a. (13 issues), here. Amazon offer a 28-day free trial, so you have four weeks to assess the latest edition. Please note their statement:
This subscription automatically renews after the free trial period until cancelled. Before it renews, you will receive a reminder notice that states the renewal rate/term then in effect. We will charge your default card or another payment method on file. If you do not wish to continue at that renewal price, you may cancel any time by visiting My content and devices.
I shall continue to subscribe to the magazine until such time as it starts pandering to women, at which point I’ll end the subscription and post another blog piece to that effect here.
