Judges make landmark privacy ruling to protect suspects in criminal investigations

Our thanks to Alan for this good news, but not enough. The opening paragraph:

Suspects in criminal investigations have a “reasonable expectation of privacy” before they are charged, Supreme Court judges have ruled in a fresh blow for press freedom.

They should have a reasonable expectation of privacy until and until and unless they’re convicted, not charged. A person does not become less “innocent” by virtue of being charged.

I was sorry to learn that Prince Andrew has settled (reportedly for £10+ million) in the face of unsubstantiated claims by a woman he may well never have met. It was surely a recognition of the corruption of due process rather than an admission of guilt, but will be taken as an admission of guilt by the general public.
