J4MB office closure / new party logo design

We’re expecting agreement to the party name change (from J4MB to the “Children & Family Party”) in the coming month, and we’re closing the office for a fortnight so we can all recharge our batteries in readiness for the busy period from the party relaunch until the next general election (May 2024, latest). The office will re-open on Monday, 11 March.

The proposed new logo is below (our apologies that the resolution isn’t better), let us know what you think.

Free Speech Union: Weekly News Round-Up

Dear Mike Buchanan,

Welcome to the Free Speech Union’s weekly newsletter, our round-up of the free speech news of the week. As with all our work, this newsletter depends on the support of our members and donors, so if you’re not already a paying member please sign up today or encourage a friend to join, and help us turn the tide against cancel culture.

Cardiff academics hounded for eight months by trans activists with kneecapping threat

We’ve written to Jeremy Miles MS, Welsh Minister for Education, urging him to intervene in the situation at Cardiff University, where several of our members and their colleagues (all academic staff) have been targeted by trans activists in a long-running campaign of intimidation.

It began in June 2021, when the academics urged Cardiff to reconsider its continuing participation in the Stonewall Diversity Champions scheme. Following this, a leaflet was distributed on campus picturing a woman holding a gun, the names and photos of the signatories, and the caption “ACT NOW”. A student whistleblower then revealed violent threats being made on the Facebook page of the Cardiff LGBT+ Society. This evidence was all presented to the University and the police, but neither responded robustly to protect the academics. The University misplaced evidence, and failed to conduct a thorough investigation in a timely manner. It defended messages referring to an academic as an “ignorant fuckface” and a call to kneecap them as legitimate expressions of free speech, even after one of the signatories had his car window smashed. You can read our letter here. Ella Whelan wrote in Spiked that the case demonstrated—yet again—trans ideology’s complete capture of the universities.

According to a new study, two thirds of academics believe academic freedom is threatened in the UK, and 40% don’t feel free to select teaching material. Our founder Toby Young told the Mail:

The people who deny there’s a free speech crisis in British universities often point to the fact that only a handful of academics are no-platformed each year. But that’s the tip of the iceberg. As George Orwell pointed out in the introduction to Animal Farm, the most ubiquitous form of censorship is self-censorship, and we know from surveys and polls that a huge number of academics are self-censoring.

Student blocked from setting up free speech society after criticising SU’s intolerance of other views

We’ve been supporting student Sam Cowie, whose bid to launch a free speech society at The Open University has been blocked by its Students’ Association after he criticised its intolerance of dissenting views in the trans debate. We spoke to GB News about the case.

Meanwhile, Manchester University has been criticised for forcing out its museum director after UK Lawyers for Israel alleged his exhibition was “designed to provoke racial discord”.

Tell the Government to protect free speech

The Government is currently holding a consultation on proposals to reform the Human Rights Act 1998. This is an opportunity to push for the maintenance and strengthening of the right to freedom of expression within the UK – and if you’d like to help we’ve created these FAQs suggesting how you might respond.

Trans speech policing

Hadley Freeman wrote for UnHerd about the vilification of women who express concerns about trans ideology. The Times reported her comments about how left-wing media outlets silence women. Jo Bartosch wrote about the media’s uniform approach to respecting the “preferred pronouns” of male sex offenders who “identify as women”.

Maya Forstater, whose landmark case was a crucial victory for free speech, wrote for UnHerd about the three-year battle that ensued after she was sacked for “tweeting about the difference between sex and gender identity”.

JK Rowling was too big to cancel, so now the trans lobby are trying to pretend she never existed, wrote Suzanne Moore in the Telegraph, after pictures surfaced of a New York Times advertising campaign showing someone “Imagining Harry Potter without its creator”. Simon Evans said it would be “demented” to pretend Harry Potter could exist without JK Rowling.

Grace Lavery, a prominent trans activist, withdrew from a debate with Helen Joyce after pressure from the “trans community” not to take part in the event.

Former Green Party spokesman Shahrar Ali is bringing legal action against the party after he was sacked for his views about trans issues. A Green candidate stood down after he was perceived to be insufficiently hostile to Kathleen Stock, who was hounded out of her job at Sussex University.

Calls to ban Russia Today

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has urged Ofcom to take action against Russia Today. James Forsyth argued in the Spectator that this would be a mistake.

Culture war

Our Deputy Research Director Emma Webb spoke on GB News about the Government’s new guidance on political impartiality in schools, arguing that it doesn’t go far enough. Frank Furedi wrote about American parents’ ongoing rebellion against school indoctrination.

Our director Douglas Murray wrote in the Telegraph that UK conservatives have abandoned the battlefield in the culture wars. Thomas Prosser argued that the future of free speech increasingly rests with conservatives. Jacob Rees-Mogg said civil servants must be “completely apolitical” and not use hashtags such as #BLM. Frank Furedi said the British state is “institutionally woke”.

Professor Eric Kaufmann of our Advisory Council spoke to GB News about the meaning of “woke” and its implications for free speech, as well as about our work.

Karen Dunbar has backed the BBC’s practice of cutting “offensive” sketches from comedy repeats. Jack Dee has defended Jimmy Carr’s right to make offensive jokes. Russell Kane said speech restrictions on comedians were worse in the 1970s.

Michael Mosbacher wrote in the Spectator about the Tate’s “grubby” cancellation of Rex Whistler.

Legal updates

Ministers have rejected plans to make misogyny a hate crime. The Government has also reportedly decided against an outright ban on anonymous online accounts. Instead, social media users are to be given the ability “to prevent anonymous accounts from engaging with them online”, while social media companies will have the ability to track which accounts are unverified and anonymous, the Sun reported.

The Times warned that the Online Safety Bill threatens free expression. Fraser Nelson said the legislation would give censors more power than ever. Lord Frost wrote in the Telegraph:

So we must return to our long-established tradition of protecting free speech. When I was young, I often heard people say, of some doubtful opinion: “Well, it’s a free country.” I don’t hear that so much now. Indeed, during the pandemic, social media companies have prevented far too much perfectly legitimate debate; unfortunately, our Government has not always pushed back on this; and the Scottish Government seems to positively revel in it. Let’s recast the Online Safety Bill; let’s put more protection for free speech into law, and let’s make this a free country again.

World news

Why is the Left silent on Justin Trudeau’s use of the Emergency Act to quell protests, asked Heydon Prowse. It is inconceivable that the response would have been the same if it happened in America under Trump, said Joanna Williams.

Ophélie Meunier, the French journalist who is living under police protection, has urged her country’s media to refrain from self-censorship when discussing Islamism.

Elaine Clarke, 49, ‘lazy’ mother who starved 24-year-old Down’s Syndrome daughter to death in filthy room filled with takeaway boxes and dirty nappies ‘rejected help from family because she believed she knew better’ – as she’s jailed for 10 years

Our thanks to Ken for this. A derisory sentence – the woman will be out of prison in under seven years – and it’s the latest tragedy which surely wouldn’t have happened if the “carer” had been the person’s father. The full article:

A mother who slowly starved her Down’s Syndrome daughter to death in a filthy bedroom covered in takeaway boxes and used nappies has been jailed for nearly 10 years.

Elaine Clarke, 49, ‘bought herself handbags and shoes’ while daughter Debbie Leitch, 24, wasted away in a dark, faeces-covered room which ‘smelled of death’.

Emergency services described the scene as ‘truly shocking’, with Ms Leitch’s face ‘completely encrusted with scabs and thickened skin, such that she was no longer recognisable as being a young female’ when she was discovered on August 29, 2019.

She was suffering to such an extent that police were initially unable to identify her sex when they found her body – weighing just 3st 10lb.

A post mortem examination gave her cause of death as ‘severe emaciation and neglect with extensive and severe scabies skin infection’.

Clarke had received weekly benefit payments of £215 to care for her daughter, but she pleaded guilty to gross negligence manslaughter in December – having initially denied the offence.

She was today jailed for nine years and seven months after admitting to gross negligent manslaughter at Preston Crown Court.

The court heard Ms Leitch’s condition had ‘deteriorated dramatically’ in the months leading up to her death.

John Harrison QC, prosecuting, told the court of the terrible conditions that Debbie’s decomposing body was found in when emergency services discovered her.

He said: ‘Debbie was extremely emaciated with a severe rash to the scalp, the face and the soles of the feet. The jumper and trousers worn by the deceased were filthy and mites were found crawling on them. A urine soiled nappy was found inside her trousers.

‘A live maggot was found next to the body. As her clothing was cut away from her body, bits of skin came away with it as it had adhered to her body.

‘Mites were found crawling all over her back. The trousers were covered in liquid faeces. Debbie’s hair was falling out due to the scabies rash. Her face was covered with the rash.

‘Debbie’s ribs were visible through the skin. All of her limbs were wasted and the rash was widespread on them. Her buttocks were completely covered in faeces which extended down to the thighs.

‘As the body was examined, large areas of skin fell away from the body. More than 30 per cent of her skin was covered in the rash, which was more severe in some parts of the body than others.’

Clarke’s niece, Sammy Mugridge, visited the home a month before Debbie’s death.

She found the daughter lying on a filthy mattress in a dark, foul-smelling room covered in takeaway boxes and dirty nappies.

She warned Clarke that Debbie would die if she was not looked after and subsequently reported her to social services.

Ms Mugridge told the court: ‘I’ll never forget the last day I saw Debbie alive. I knew she was ill and not well, but the sight of her in the room will live with me forever.

‘The stench was unbelievable… I can only describe it as the stench of death.

‘Debbie was so skinny. Her hair had been hacked off her skin looked like raw flesh. It was like something out of a horror movie.’

Following a safeguarding report on July 26, a month before her death, a GP from Whitegate Health Centre arranged a home visit the same day.

As a result, Clarke made efforts to clean up the room and put her daughter in the shower.

However, the court heard that Ms Leitch ‘screamed throughout the shower’ as the pain on her irritated skin ‘must have been excruciating’.

Clarke reassured the GP that she was treating her daughter’s skin infection with medication.

The doctor made arrangements to make a second visit on August 12, but when he arrived, he was unable to gain access to the property and attempts to arrange a follow-up were ignored. [J4MB: Why were the police not called at this point, at least?]

Clarke similarly presented her daughter to Blackpool Council social workers, telling them she was ‘doing really well, was eating really well, and was spending time downstairs’.

But Ms Leitch’s condition continued to deteriorate and she was heard crying and calling ‘mummy, mummy’ by a neighbour in the days leading up to her death, the court heard.

When Clarke finally called 999, it was determined that Debbie had been dead for between eight and 36 hours. [J4MB emphasis]

Clarke initially denied the unlawful killing of her vulnerable daughter, but changed her plea to guilty on January – just 10 days before the case was due to go to trial.

Her former partner Robert Bruce, 45, from Rothwell in Leeds, was charged with allowing or causing the death of a vulnerable adult, but this was later dropped.

Passing sentence today, Judge Amanda Yip told the defendant: ‘You are responsible for Debbie’s death. You were her mother, she lived with you and you were also paid as her carer.

‘You have at times continued to minimise your responsibility… You say you did your best. You may be in denial, to yourself as much as others, but you cannot say that is true.

‘Not only did you not do your best, but you must have done absolutely nothing to care for her.

‘Instead, you simply abandoned her to die alone, in pain, without nourishment, in the most awful state. The pain she must have felt is apparent.’

The judge continued: ‘Debbie was starved, the scabies was allowed to run out of control, she became more and more weakened until she died. In her last days, she was denied the most basic care and dignity.

‘Debbie was a happy child growing up, but I didn’t feel she got the attention and affection she deserved.

‘She loved horses and she would often stand in the mirror brushing her long hair. All she wanted was love and affection from her mother. Unfortunately Elaine never gave it to her.

‘Anything Debbie got always seemed to be an afterthought. She was rarely taken out socially and was left at home when Elaine and Robert went out.

‘She wore Elaine’s clothes because she never had any of her own.

‘Elaine has always been a lazy and selfish mother, only interested in her own personal needs.

‘She’d buy herself handbags and shoes but was too lazy to get out of bed to look after her family. She neglected her children.

‘People were always trying to help Elaine, but she always rejected help, believing she knew better.

‘Debbie didn’t have a life. It was robbed from her by the one person who should have cared for her: her mother.’

Clarke must serve at least two thirds of her prison sentence before she is eligible for release, after which she will remain on licence.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say they ‘stand with’ the people of Ukraine and urge world leaders to join them opposing Putin’s ‘breach of international and humanitarian law’

They’re so brave. The Ukrainian people will surely be relieved to have the fruitloops’ support.

Security chief tells our spies to go woke: With a full Ukraine invasion imminent in Europe’s worst crisis since WW2, MI5 and MI6 officers are being told to think about their ‘white privilege’… and avoid using words such as ‘grip’ and ‘strong’

Our thanks to Nigel for this piece published just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine yesterday. He writes:

It appears that female spies are “humiliated” by having to earn the respect of their team mates and need them to “support” them to be confident. It would be funny if this was some arts group or a bunch of book prize organisers, but these are the people supposedly keeping us safe from Islamic State and Russia and a hostile Chinese Communist Party. One can see why Vladimir Putin seems so confident. As one commentator says, it’s so ridiculous maybe it’s a double bluff, to persuade our enemies that our Secret Services are really so useless, when in fact they aren’t so silly at all…. one can hope.

Russian invasion of Ukraine: Many men killed, women affected most

Quelle surprise, no sign of the “brave” female Ukrainian “soldiers” – an example being Maria, 26, perfect manicure, BBC report here – who we were laughingly told were in the front line to halt any attempted Russian invasion. In the meantime, many “people” (male soldiers) are resisting the advance and being killed by the Russian forces. Men between the ages of 18 – 30 are forbidden to leave the country. BBC interviews in the major Ukrainian cities are focusing on worried women. Many men killed, women affected most. Same old, same old…
